Queen Charlotte HMS (+1800) HMS QUEEN CHARLOTTE; 1st Rate; 100 cannons; 2.286 bm; 190x52.5 ft; Built in 1790, Chatham. On 17th March 1800 the QUEEN CHARLOTTE (Capt. TODD) was sailing from Livorno to the island of Cabrera, when about 10 miles from her destination, she was found to be on fire. Soon the ship was ablaze from stem to stern and her guns were going off in all directions. An hour later the ship blew up and then turned over to float bottom up. The total loss was 673 out of a complement of 840 officers, men and boys and included.

Sailed from Newcastle and Sydney for Calcutta via Bass Strait with coal, and a crew of twenty-six, ran gently on to a beach on the north east coast of Flinders Island during the night after dubious navigation in hazy conditions, 17 March 1877. Efforts to move her nearly succeeded but gradually she sank into the sand and became immobilised. A boat was sent off under the second officer but returned after finding no trace of habitation. It was clear that nothing could be done to save the vessel, so efforts were made to recover her gear and set up camp on shore. Three days after leaving the wreck, the chief officer and three arrived at Settlement Point, with the aid of a hunter; arrangements were made to take most of the crew to Launceston in the ketch Julia. An inquiry found that the mishap was probably caused by a strong south-westerly current which was not reported in the directories the master was using, and that he and his officers were blameless for her loss. On 14 April 1877 the steamer Black Boy left Melbourne to commence salvage operations; in mid-May the schooner Inglis was sent with a salvage team of twenty-three which managed to recover all of the vessel’s gear and spars apart from the lower masts. Also the tug paddle-steamer Williams arrived but the ship had settled. The hull continued to sink into the sand until it completely disappeared, and one of the masts remained upright for over a century to mark the spot until it collapsed in the 1980s.

Rusland SS (+1877)The Red Star Line steam ship Rusland was built in 1872, by Dundee ship builders in Scotland and originally named the Kenilworth. She was 345 feet long, had a 37 foot beam and displaced 2,538 tons. At 11:20 PM on March 17, 1877, under the command of Captain Jesse De Horsey, the Red Star steamer ran aground. A moderate gale was blowing from the northeast at the time, and a heavy sea prevailed. According to a statement from Captain De Horsey the Rusland had sailed into a dense fog, "the weather was thick with an occasional snow squall." "At 9o´clock 20 fathoms were found and sea cakes were brought up. As these cakes have never to my knowledge been found west of Fire Island, I concluded that the vessel was off the Long Island coast". "Twenty - five minutes later the lookout cried Light on the port bow ! I thought that a mistake had been made by the sailor, as there should have been a light on our starboard bow." "I telegraphed for the vessel to be put about. Before this could be done, however, she struck". According to the NEW YORK TIMES, "The vessel headed straight on the beach, and keeled to the starboard side. She filled with water immediately afterward, and, from the volume which rushed in, it is supposed she must have struck a rock, making a hole in her hull". She was carrying 200 passengers and a cargo of plate glass and iron wire from Antwerp to New York. At first salvage crews anticipated no problem pulling the liner off the beach. It was later discovered that the ship was stuck fast onto the sunken wreck of the Adonis which had come ashore twenty years earlier. On April 8th, the Rusland finally gave in to the constant pounding of the shore breakers and broke in two. This wreck along with the Adonis, are together known as the Dual Wrecks . They now sits in 25 feet of water just offshore and north of the tip of the jetty.

John Bertram SV (+1883)She is said to have been a very fine extreme clipper ship. She was named after the famous Salem sea captain and merchant John Bertram. She had a figurehead with a representation of an eagle on the wing and a large medallion bust of her namesake at her stern. She made 4 voyages from Boston for San Francisco round the Horn and finally for Manila before being sold to Sloman on 30th of April 1855 for $36.000. In Sloman's services she served as emigrant trader between Europe and New York, returning with a cargo either of tobacco or cotton. Her masters were H. Visser (1855), T.J. Knudtsen (1855-62), A.J. Dierks (1863), H.C. Johannsen (1863-64), F.G. Herting (1864-65), H.O. Edye (1865-66), G. Hopfner (1866-67), Heinrich Petersen (1868-71), Hans Petersen (1871) and J.H. Fendt (1871-72). She was sold to norwegian owner Roed & Soenner of Toensberg who used her in the timber trade between Quebec and London. On 22 February 1883, she sailed from New York for Rotterdam, but was abandoned at sea on 17 March, her crew being taken aboard the Norwegian bark OXO, Dahl, master, which landed at London on 29 March 1883, with 10 crewmen, the remainder having transferred to another vessel.

Utopia SS (+1891) UTOPIA Anchor Line; 1874; R. Duncan & Co.; 2,731 tons; 350.2X35.2x29.5; 250 h.p.; 12.5 knots; triple expansion engines. The Anchor liner, Utopia (Capt. J. M'Keague) left Naples on March 12th, 1891, bound for New York with 3 saloon passengers, 815 Italian emigrants, of whom 661 were men, 85 women and 67 children, together with a crew of 59 and three stowaways, making 880 persons all told. In the evening of March 17th, while a full gale was blowing and a strong current setting, the ship was in the Bay of Gibraltar close to the Mediterranean Fleet which was riding at anchor. By a grave error of judgment, the captain brought his vessel across the bows of the battleship Anson, making no allowance for the warship's underwater ram. This tore a hole 26 feet long by 15 feet wide in her side close to the stern. Bulkheads and engines were torn away and the vessel began to settle by the stern. The terrified emigrants rushed to the bows and began to jump, or were thrown, into the sea. The ships of the fleet sent their boats with all speed, but the night was pitch black and there was stark terror on board the liner. Many acts of heroism were performed by the naval men, two of whom were drowned when the pinnace of the Immortalite was smashed. The liner sank in a very short time with the loss of 520 emigrants, one saloon passenger and 12 of the crew. The Anson received only trifling damage, her ram showing no signs of injury. The Utopia had sunk in about nine fathoms and her masts and funnel were showing above water. Divers were sent down and reported the ship to be in 43 feet of water forward and 56 feet aft. Her position constituted a hindrance and a possible danger to navigation and the question of raising her was considered at once. Mr. Thomas Napier Armit, a Scottish engineer, undertook the task and built a cofferdam, then an unusual form of salvage engineering, and managed to bring the ship to the surface within the short period of 17 weeks from the date of the disaster. On July 8th, 1891, the Utopia was once more afloat.

The Bee was a wooden steamship of 17 tons register, driven by engines of 12 horse power. She was built in Newcastle ln 1885 and was owned by R. S. Hayles, of Townsville. Her passenger-carrying service at this period of the history of Magnetic Island was irregular, being undertaken only when traffic was of sufficient dimensions, to warrant it . On October 15, 1900, the Bee rounded up in Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, and picked up the moorings that had been specially laid down for her service. The sea was then rather rough and the wind strong east. It abated considerably until near midnight, but then the velocity streng thened to a very great degree and a heavy sea Bet in. At 4.30, the mooring chain gave way, and the vessel, dragging her working anchor and kedge, struck the rocks at Bacon Point, west of Picnic Bay, and sank. On this occasion, however, she was salvaged, but she lived to perform only another year's work. It was one of those fateful casual ties likely to occur at any moment, and generally disastrous in times of stress, that was to mean the end of the little steamer. On March 17, 1901, the Bee cast off from the old Jetty (then newly-erected) at Picnic Bay. in charge of Captain Joshua McLeod Daniel Colquhoun was engineer, and passengers were Ernest Mountstephen Smith (clerk), William Gowthorp (salesman), and Robert Hayles (owner of the vessel) . The Bee left the jetty stern drst, with the rudder amidships, and after clearing the Jetty by about 70 feet, the engines were stopped and then turned ahead. Captain McLeod, who was at the wheel, then endeavoured to give the ship her port helm with ordinary strength, but could not move it. As the change of direction was essential, Captain McLeod then placed his foot on the spoke of the wheel, and exerted all his physical strength in an effort to move it The result was disaster; the chain Jumped the gypsy, for, unbeknown to Captain McLeod, the wheel chains had become lambed With his steering gear useless, the master kept the engines going ahead and endeavored to get the vessel alongside the jetty again, but the wind and sea got her broadside on and carried her on to the beach. Here, despite every endeavor to gret her off, she remained, until March 19, when she broke up and became a total wreck. This 12.500 ton liner was coming in from Australia with 456 passengers and crew ( and one stowaway) when a combination of poor visibility and poor navigation brought her to grief. There followed the most successful rescue in the history of the lifeboat service - not a soul was lost. The ship was so badly damaged that she was eventually blown in half. The aft section was towed to Southampton and a new bow built. The Suevic was a troopship during the First Word War, and then a whaling factory ship...and she died honourably. Her Norwegian crew schuttled her in 1942 to save her from falling in Germand hands.

Monongahela USS (+1908)USS Monongahela, a 2078-ton steam screw sloop built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in January 1863. Her first service was on the lower Mississippi River, where she was heavily engaged at Port Hudson and elsewhere. From mid-1863 to the end of the Civil War, Monongahela participated in the Gulf of Mexico blockade. On 5 August 1864, she played an active role in the Battle of Mobile Bay, ramming the Confederate ironclad Tennessee.Following the War, Monongahela was assigned to the West Indies. On 18 November 1867, she was cast ashore at St. Croix, Virgin Islands, by a tidal wave and was only refloated six months later. In 1873, after extensive repairs, she began six years' service in the Pacific, the western Atlantic and in Asiatic waters. Monongahela was converted to a sailing storeship in 1883-84, with her engines removed to increase storage space. From then until 1890, she served as supply vessel at Callao, Peru.Monongahela's next role was as a ship-rigged sail training ship for apprentice seamen and, from 1894 to 1899, for the U.S. Naval Academy's midshipmen. Her training duties ended in 1904, when she became storeship at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Monongahela was destroyed by fire there on 17 March 1908.

City Of Sydney SS (+1914) CITY OF SYDNEY Steel Built at Newcastle, United Kingdom. Registered at Montreal. Originally, the ADMIRAL, she was renamed TOSARI and then ROSALIND. under the last name she ran for many years between New York, Halifax and St. John's, Newfoundland for the Bowring Brothers. At the very end of her career she was renamed CITY OF SYDNEY. In 1912, the CITY OF SYDNEY was involved in a collision with the tug Douglas H. Thomas in Sydney Harbour. Neither vessel sank, but 5 men died in the incident. CITY OF SYDNEY was on voyage from New York, New York to Halifax with passengers and coal, when on the 17th March 1914, she ran aground, off Shag Rock, at the entrance to Halifax Harbour. The steamer ROSEMARY was the first to locate the stricken vessel and rescued the eleven passengers along with most of the fifty crew. The Captain and a few of the crew remained behind to see if the vessel could be saved but she had suffered severe damage and was abandoned. No lives were lost in the rescue.

SS Leeuwarden, built by Sir Raylton Dixon & Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough in 1903 and owned at the time of her loss by General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., London, was a British steamer of 990 tons. Some suspicion about UKHO position (id.7370) for two reasons: 1.a) this position is 16 miles NW from Point Lynas, contradicting the Kriegstagebuch (uboat's captain log) mentioning 7 miles NE from Point Lynas. She could have drifted from her torpedo position, but with 20 people lost, we suspect she sank fast, not allowing her to drift so far. 1.b) The wreck's cargo holds are reported to be empty, while she was carrying general cargo. 2. Many times named Seagull, leading to doubles in databases.

On March 17th, 1918, in a dak stormy night, Tripoli was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-49 (Hans von Mellenthin), off Capo Figari. Tripoli was carrying 457 people, including 63 crewmen. The military were 376, 18 civilians, including some women. The torpedo struck the engine room of the overloaded Tripoli. Of the 63 crew on board, 38 were saved. Of the 376 military, only 147 were saved. Of the 18 civilian passengers, 3 men and a woman were saved. The number of casualties seems to contradict the time to sink, which was 4 hours. The explanation for this is that her communication equipment was out of order and that she could not send a distress call.

Hall Caine SS (+1937)At 4:30 p.m. on 17th March the steamer Idant came to the aid of the Hall Caine which was in danger of foundering. Most of the crew were taken off and an attempt was made to tow the latter vessel to port. The Hall Caine continued to ship water and list heavily. The remainder of the crew were picked up and at 6:50 p.m. the Hall Caine capsized and sank. According to the findings of the subsequent marine inquiry , the vessel was a "Coffin ship". The hull had ship worm, was rotten and had been patched for years. The donkey pump consumed too much water, the boiler couldn't provide enough steam, the engines lacked governors to prevent racing and the hand pump didn't work. Once the vessel started shipping water there was no possible outcome other than the foundering of the ship.

At 23.25 hours on 17 Mar, 1940, U-38 fired a spread of two torpedoes at an illuminated steamer of about 5000 grt east of the Shetlands. The ship sank 10 minutes after being hit by one torpedo. The victim must have been the Argentina.

17 March 1943 At 1125 hours nine Beaufighters of No. 272 Squadron took off to escort nine Beauforts of No. 39 Squadron on a shipping strike off Point Stelo. At 1138 hours Beaufighter 'N', with Sgt Donald Frazee at the controls and Sgt Sandery as observer, began to vibrate and lost speed rapidly, There was no option but to ditch the aircraft and this was accomplished at 100mph in a slight swell about 1,000 yards off Dragonara Point, Sliema. As all this took place close to shore, persons watching informed Fighter Control but Maltese dghajsas reached the crew some five minutes before HSL166 arrived on the spot. The aircrew was transferred to the launch. Frazee reported: "I took off and the aircraft responded normally to the controls and I climbed to 1,500 feet turning left in search of two aircraft I was to formate on. I located them after one circuit; let down to 1,000 feet and the whole aircraft began to vibrate violently. My observer had reported smoke coming through his heating pipe shortly after take off but since all my instruments were reading correctly I saw no cause for alarm. As soon as the vibration started I throttled the starboard engine right back and put the pitch control in fully coarse. This had no effect; in fact the vibration seemed to be increasing. I checked the port engine in a similar manner but it did not help. Throttling back both engines was also ineffective. By this time the vibration had increased until I found it very difficult to see my instruments. My airspeed was approximately 130 mph and the aircraft was losing height at three or four hundred feet a minute. At 600 feet I told Sgt Sandery we would have to ditch. I held a steady course and continued to work with the engines but was quite unable to hold the aircraft aloft. I did not use 'flap' but held the aircraft fairly well into wind throttling back completely, shortly before the impact. We had both the top escape hatches unlatched a few seconds before ditching, There was a slight swell running and the aircraft hit the water at approximately 100-mph. I was thrown forward and struck the corner of my right eye and the right side of my jaw on the reflector sight. It was possible that I was knocked out momentarily. I remember a flood of water through the top hatch, releasing my safety harness and a slight tug as my intercom plug broke the socket. I kept my parachute on and experienced no difficulty in climbing out of the top hatch. As I came out I turned and saw my observer free of the aircraft, He had been strapped in but had not braced himself in any other way. Apart from a minor bruise on the forehead he was uninjured. By the time we had both floated free, the aircraft had disappeared. I would estimate the time afloat as fifteen seconds. We both found our Mae West entirely satisfactory. Mine was half inflated and it supported my weight complete with flying boots and parachute easily. Both of us then inflated our K-type dinghies without difficulty. We were both seated in our dinghies at about 1155 hours. The wing dinghy had broken loose on impact but had not inflated. Within five minutes we were both picked up by Maltese dghajsas and five minutes after that the rescue launch arrived. Harry Luckenbach SS (+1943)Between 03.37 and 03.41 hours on 17 Mar, 1943, U-91 fired five torpedoes at the convoy HX-229 about 400 miles east-southeast of Cape Farewell and observed detonations on two ships, but in fact only the Harry Luckenbach was hit and sunk. The Harry Luckenbach (Master Ralph McKinnon) was assigned to station #111, the ship had been so exposed that the master had nervously steamed a zigzag course out in front of the convoy until ordered to return to his station. The vessel was struck by two torpedoes on the starboard side amidships in the machinery spaces, causing her to sink within 3 minutes in the rough seas. However, some of the nine officers, 45 crew members and 26 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 4in, one 3in and eight 20mm guns) abandoned ship in three lifeboats, which were first spotted by the British destroyers HMS Beverley (H 64) and HMS Volunteer (I 71), but not picked up. The British corvette HMS Anemone (K 48) was ordered to find the lifeboats, after the British corvette HMS Pennywort (K 111) had come across them and could not pick up the men because she already had 108 survivors on board. But the other corvette was unable to locate the boats and it is possible that the boats were also seen by the British corvette HMS Abelia (K 184) on her way from St.Johns to join the convoy. None of the men from the Harry Luckenbach were seen or heard from again.

Between 00.23 and 00.25 hours on 17 Mar, 1943, U-758 fired two FAT and two G7e torpedoes at the convoy HX-229 and reported three ships sunk and another damaged. In fact, the Zaanland and James Oglethorpe were sunk and the Dutch motor tanker Magdala (8248 tons) missed. The James Oglethorpe (Master Albert W. Long) on her maiden voyage in station #93 was struck by one torpedo on the starboard side at the forward section of the #2 hold. The ship began settling by the head with her rudder stuck and a starboard list. A fire in the #1 hold was extinguished within 15 minutes by the crew. 43 men of the eight officers, 36 crewmen, 26 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 4in, one 3in and eight 20mm guns) and four passengers (US Navy personnel) abandoned ship without orders in two lifeboats, while the vessel made large circles to port at 8 knots. The fall of one boat was cut prematurely and threw its occupants into the sea, drowning 13 men. Another man died when he fell into the water while trying to get into the second boat. The three officers, 10 crewmen, two passengers and 15 armed guards in the second boat were picked up by the HMS Pennywort (K 111) and landed at Londonderry on 22 March. The James Oglethorpe tried to reach St.Johns, but was never seen again. The master and 29 men who remained on board were lost. The ship probably foundered en route by the damage recieved by the torpedo hit or she was sunk in the morning by a torpedo from U-91 (Walkerling), but this U-boat is credited with sinking the stragglers Irénée Du Pont and Nariva.

Terkoelei SS (+1943)At 14.05 hours on 17 Mar, 1943, U-384 (Rosenberg-Gruszcynski) fired three torpedoes at the convoy HX-229 northeast of St.Johns, heard three detonations and claimed two ships sunk and another as damaged. At the same time U-631 reported the sinking of a tanker with one torpedo. It is unlikely that the Coracero in station #92 and the Terkoelei were hit by the same U-boat, apparently U-384 sank the first ship and U-631 the latter. The Terkoelei had been in station #104, but in the morning on 17 March took over the station #91 as leading ship of the starboard column. At 14.06 hours, U-631 attacked the convoy, heard after 1 minute 18 seconds a hit and then sinking noises. The crew, consisting of Dutch men, Lascars and British gunners, abandoned ship in four lifeboats but many Lascars were so shocked that two boats failed to clear the capsizing ship and were hit by the mainmast and the funnel, drowning many occupants. The survivors were picked up by HMS Mansfield (G 76) (LtCdr L.C. Hill, OBE) and landed at Gourock.

At 01.22 hours on 17 Mar, 1943, the William Eustis (Master Cecil Desmond) in station #22 of convoy HX-229 was hit on the starboard side by one of two FAT torpedoes from U-435, the other missed by 200 feet. The torpedo struck in the #2 hold, blew of the hatch covers of #2 and #3 holds, flooded the hold and a split became visible on the starboard side 20 feet from the hold to the bridge. The eight officers, 34 crewmen and 30 armed guards (the ship was armed with one 5in, one 3in and eight 20mm guns) abandoned ship after 30 minutes in one lifeboat and four rafts because heavy weather had damaged four of the boats and another was damaged by the explosion. The survivors were picked up after four hours by HMS Volunteer (D 71), which scuttled the wreck by gunfire and depth charges and landed the men at Liverpool on 22 March.

In fact, the Zaanland and James Oglethorpe were sunk and the Dutch motor tanker Magdala (8248 grt) missed. The Zaanland (Master Gerardus Franken) in station #103 was hit by one torpedo on the starboard side abreast of the main mast and sank by the stern after about ten minutes. All men abandoned ship in lifeboats and were picked up by the escorts.

Dempo MV (+1944)At 09.38 hours on 17 Mar, 1944, U-371 fired a Gnat at the convoy SNF-17 about 30 miles north-northeast of Bougie and observed a hit on a ship, which settled by the stern after the hit. At 09.42 hours, a spread of three torpedoes were fired and two hits were heard. After another Gnat at 09.48 hours, a further detonation on another ship was heard.

The first torpedo struck the Maiden Creek in station #52 and the second the Dempo. The first ship was hit again at 13.50 hours by a torpedo. The Maiden Creek (Master Oscar Pedersen) was hit by a torpedo forward of the #4 hatch. The explosion broke the shaft, the back of the ship and filled the #4 hold and the engine room with water.

The eight officers, 40 crewmen, 29 armed guards (the ship was armed with two 3in and eight 20mm guns) and one passenger abandoned ship in two lifeboats and a raft as the ship slowly settled by the stern.

The boats waited two hours near the vessel until an escort appeared and ordered the men back on the vessel to prepare her to be towed by a tug. They tied up the boats at the stern and reboarded the ship. At 13.50 hours, the U-boat fired a torpedo which struck on the port side in the stern.

The explosion lifted the ship out of the water, destroyed the lifeboats and killed one officer, two armed guards and five crewmen. The survivors jumped overboard and swam to a single raft near the ship.

They were rescued after 30 minutes by motor launches from a British destroyer and brought to Bougie. The badly damaged Maiden Creek was towed by a British escort vessel to Bougie on the morning of 18 March and beached, but broke in two forward of the #4 hold and was declared a total loss.

Irene SS [+1969]On March 17th, 1969, the Liberian steel cargo ship IRENE, built in 1947 by Ateliers & Chantiers De La Loire and owned at the time of her loss by San Paraskevi Shipping Co. ran out of fuel in a storm. IRENE was driven ashore 0.5 miles south of Grim Ness Head and the crew of 17 were saved with a breeches buoy. During the rescue operations, 8 crew members of the Longhope lifeboat T.G.B. lost their lives. Notes : 1. The IRENE was sold for scrap but wreckage (boiler and engine) is still present on the site. 2. The IRENE was the ex-PRESIDENT EMILE MARCHESE and ex-ANZEN (ref. Ian Crawford)

Built: Astilleros Españoles, SA, Cadiz; 1974. The very large crude carrier (VLCC) Amoco Cadiz was built to carry oil between the Persian Gulf and Europe. In early February 1978, she loaded 121,157 tons of oil at Ras Tanara, Saudi Arabia, and then topped off with 98,640 tons at Kharg Island, Iran. (A ton of crude is 7.3 barrels, or 306.6 gallons.) She left the Persian Gulf on February 7, bound for Rotterdam, via Lyme Bay, England, a customary stop to lighten tankers before the passage up the North Sea. Rounding the Cape of Good Hope on the 28th, she made a fueling stop at Las Palmas on March 11. Three days later Amoco Cadiz began to encounter heavy weather, which continued through March 16, by which point she was entering the English Channel, due into Lyme Bay later that day. At about 0916, the tanker was about eight miles north of Ushant (Ouessant) when her steering gear failed. Although Captain Pasquale Bandari hoisted the international signal for ´´Not Under Command´´ almost immediately, he did not request assistance until 1120! Then his engineer determined that the damage was irreparable. The German salvage tug Pacific, under command of Captain Weinert, arrived on the scene at 1220. The first tow was secured at 1425 but parted at 1719. As Amoco Cadiz drifted toward shore, the port anchor was let go at about 2004, but it did not hold. A second tow was secured at 2023, but the sheer mass of Amoco Cadiz in the teeth of Force 10 weather conditions made it impossible for Pacific to do more than slow the ship´s coastward drift. At 2104, Amoco Cadiz touched bottom for the first time, and her hull and storage tanks were ripped open. Half an hour later she grounded on Men Goulven Rocks in 48°36N, 4°46W. Her crew were rescued by helicopter. At 1000 on March 17 the vessel broke in two, spilling 223,000 tons of crude oil. The oil slick spread across 125 miles of the coast of Brittany, destroying fisheries, oyster and seaweed beds, and bathing beaches despite the efforts of 10,000 French soldiers deployed to clean the beaches. The storm continued to pound the ship, and on March 28 she broke into three sections. The French Navy subsequently destroyed the remains of the ship with depth charges. It would be another ten years before the resulting lawsuits were wound up, and in 1988 a U.S. federal judge ordered Amoco Oil Corporation to pay $85.2 million in fines—$45 million for the costs of the spill and $39 million in interest.
