Lettens Jan16/10/2013On December 29th, 1917, the British iron passenger/cargo ship PEREGRINE, built in 1892 by Thompson W. B. & Co. Ltd. and owned at the time of her loss by General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., on voyage from Rotterdam to London with passengers and general cargo, was wrecked on Long Sand.

The General Steam Navigation Co. Ltd was the oldest shipping company in the world to start directly with steamships in 1821. A huge coastal liner fleet with its four subsidiaries including Moss-Hutchison Line, New Medway Steam Packet Co. Ltd (pioneers of the Thames day excursion trades along with G.S.N.C.).
