  History

Lettens Jan05/03/2012On September 24th, 1939, the Estonian cargo ship HANONIA was captured by the German submarine U-34. She was transfered to the Kriegsmarine, renamed SCHIFF II and rebuilt as a minelayer in Hamburg in 1940.

Beginning of March 1940, she laid a minefield, off North Foreland, sinking SANTA GODELIEVA, AMOR, ROSE EFFEUILLEE, MELROSE, SABA, SINT ANNALAND and TINA PRIMO and damaging NIRITOS and PHOBOS.

She was later renamed SCHIFF III. SCHIFF III was grounded while laying mines, when she struck a rock off the Northwest Norwegian coast. She was towed to Bergen and used there as a minelayer. She was possibly sunk by a mine in May, 1940.
