About Owners

Rankin, Gilmour & Co - Saint Line - British & Foreign S.S., Liverpool

Sir William Dingwall Mitchell Cotts (1871-1932) was involved in shipowning, collieries and national politics in the UK. He was the owner of many lines. He owned the Saint Line, Sun Shipping, British & Foreign S.S. Co.

Below is the history of the Saint Line Ltd., acquired in 1935.

Saint Line Ltd. originated in 1804 from Pollok, Gilmour & Co. of 1804.

In 1861 being placed under Rankin, Gilmour & Co. using a "Saint" nomenclature and operating as the British & Foreign S.S. Co. Ltd.

Renamed in 1919 to Saint Line Ltd.

In 1934 shifted from Liverpool to London.

Shortly after coming under Mitchell Cotts & Co. Ltd.

Saint Line Ltd. ceased to exist in 1962.

Remark: there has been another Sun Shipping company, owned by Alexander Robert (the owner of the original Hall Line), but this company operated much earlier than this one.
