  History

Allen Tony22/01/2008The KT-12 is a well-known but rarely visited wreck. It lies in 33m of clear Mediterranean water, just a couple of miles from shore in the Gulf of Orosei, off the east coast of Sardinia.

This 70m-long, flat-hulled, large landing craft was built in Italy for the German navy. It was on its maiden voyage, transporting vehicles, fuel and other supplies to Rommel´s Afrika Korps, when it was torpedoed and sunk by the British submarine HMS Safari on 10 June 1943.

The torpedo struck just behind the bow, opening the front of the ship to the sea and causing it to plough below, sinking rapidly to the sea bed. The bulk of the wreck sits upright and is surrounded by debris, including several military lorries.
