  History

Allen Tony24/05/2014The Sun Vista SS was originally built as the SS Galileo. Galileo SS was an ocean liner built in 1963 by Cantieri Riuniti dell´ Adriatico, Monfalcone, Italy for Lloyd Triestino´s Italy—Australia service. In 1979 she was converted to a cruise ship, and subsequently sailed under the names Galileo and Meridian. She sank in the Strait of Malacca in 1999 as the Sun Vista and was owned by Sun Cruises. In1997, following Royal Caribbean International´s acquisition of Celebrity Cruises, the ship was sold to Sun Cruises ( Metro Holdings Ltd, Nassau, Bahamas) which operated her as SS Sun Vista.

On 20th May 1999 the vessel suffered an engine room fire, which cut all power and caused her to sink on 21 May 1999 at 0121 hrs. All 1,090 passengers and crew were safely evacuated

About Builders
Cantieri Riuniti Dell´ Adriatico CRDA, Trieste & Monfalcone
Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico was founded in 1930 from the merger between Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino (Trieste) and Cantiere Navale Triestino (Monfalcone). CRDA built cruisers, submarines and battleships for the Italian Navy. After the wars it remained in business and focused partly on building cruise liners. Nowadays (2010) the yard is still in operation but is owned since 1984 by Fincantieri Group.
