  History

Lettens Jan17/09/2008M/V Lakonia; Passenger Liner; Owned by General Steam Navigation Company and initially built in 1930 for the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland, Amsterdam as the MS Johan van Oldenbarnevelt; 19040 grt; 609 ft.; 19 knots; diesel engines

On December 22nd 1963, while having 646 passengers and 376 crew on board during a Christmas Cruise, Lakonia (Capt. Mathios Zarbis) caught fire. It was around midnight and many passengers were in the ship´s ballroom.

The emergency procedure on board went into a real fiasco. The extinguishers weren´t powerful enough, the alarm signal too weak and only half of the lifeboats were being used. 4 hours after the first S.O.S. call, the first ship arrived to their rescue.

In total 128 souls were lost by drowning, the fire or injuries while jumping over board.

An effort was done to tug the ship for salvage, but as she was taking water, she capsized and finally disappeared below the waves some 250 miles West from Gibraltar.
