Lettens Jan08/02/2010On August 1st 1646, both VOC ships, Breskens and Visser were lost in a sea battle off the Bay of Tigaol (Ticau).

The Dutch were blocking the entrance of Spanish ships, coming from Mexico at the strategic important Strait of San Bernardino. Two Spanish ships were also laying there, waiting the return of the Spanish fleet from Mexico.

When the Dutch decided to withdraw, the Spaniards, though inferior in number, attacked them, hereby sinking Visser and Breskens and 2 fire ships of the Dutch in the Bay of Ticao.
