  History

Lettens Jan24/05/2012YOSHIDA MARU was built in 1941 by Hakodate Dock for the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line. She was requisioned the same year by the Imperial Japanes Navy, converted to a gunboat and returned to her owners in 1943.

On 18th January 1944, US submarine USS FLASHER (SS-249) sinks the tanker YOSHIDA MARU, 140 miles west-southwest of Marcus Island.

Note: This YOSHIDA MARU of 2.926 tons is being confused in many sources, even in Wikipedia, with the larger passenger/cargo ship YOSHIDA MARU NO.1 of 5.431 tons, torpedoed by USS JACK in 1944 with a large number of casualties.
Allen Tony19/05/2009The steamship Yoshida Maru SS was taken over by the Japanese Navy and converted into an auxiliary gunboat. On January 18th, 1944, she was torpedoed and sunk by the U.S. submarine USS Flasher about 500 miles E. of the Kazan Islands.
