   History

Lettens Jan10/08/2010The Catania has been described in various sources as a cargo, while it seems to have been an ocean liner.

This has now been confirmed, since the Italian Government, under pressure from the public, started to look for ´Maffia sunken ships of toxic waste´. During this search, they found the S/S Catania in 300 m of water.

This, of course, does not mean that the area is free of toxic ships. See also this news item.

Vleggeert Nico02/05/2009On a voyage from Bombay to Naples, the Italian steamship Catania was torpedoed by U-64 (Robert Moraht) and sank 15 miles from Belvedere, Calabro.

Tubeworms noticed and collected while studying a shipwreck suspect to hide toxic and radioactive waste and turned to be the piroscafo CATANIA, sunk in 1917. This has been a rare opportunity to see in the Mediterranean Sea invertebrates living on a bathyal hard substratum. Utilizing an old chair and other material available on board the survey ship MARE OCEANO, the crew prepared a basket suitable to be utilized by an arm of the work class remotely operated vehicle to bring at the surface a sample. The animals congregate in many parts of the shipwreck, these ones lives close to the bow. Now under investigation, this tubeworm appears to be a new species for science and their endobacteria lives on a source of energy to be clarified.
