Allen Tony31/01/2008Warnow SS was a 1,593grt British Merchant Steamer built in 1883. Previously called John Redhead SS. On the 2nd May 1917 when on route from Penarth to an unknown destination with a cargo of railway material when she was torpedoed by German submarine UC-48 and sunk when 6 miles West from Trevose Head, North Cornwall. 14 lives lost including Master. Owned by J. Mitchell & Sons, Dundee.

Racey Carl11/06/2009Ship No. 190 -  JOHN READHEAD  -  1883 Launched as  JOHN READHEAD February 1883 by Readheads for Franz Rahtkens & Co., a Middlesbrough firm; She was sold in 1905 to Dampf. Ges Warnow GmbH, Germany and renamed WARNOW; Resold in 1911 to James Mitchell & Sons of Dundee, Scotland; 14 lives were lost when she was torpedoed and sunk by UC 48 on 2nd May 1917 six miles west of Trevose Head.

Six survivants du naufrage du cargo Warnow furent recueillis par le cargo Duguesclin, de l’armement Alain Le Gualdès de Mézaubran, de Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-du-Nord – aujourd’hui Côtes-d’Armor). Par une décision du Sous-secrétaire d’État des Transports maritimes et de la Marine marchande en date du 24 octobre 1917 (J.O., 26 oct. 1917, p. 8.529), les récompenses suivantes furent accordées aux sauveteurs :
