  History

Allen Tony19/03/2008Inverliffey was a British Motor Tanker built in 1938 and owned by INVER TANKERS LTD. She was on route from TRINIDAD for THAMES carrying 13,000 tons of gasolene when she was torpedoed by German submarine U-38 and sunk by gunfire SW of the Scilly Isles. The master and 48 crew members were picked up by the American tanker R.G. Stewart, transferred to the American steam merchant City of Joliet and landed at Milford Haven.

The neutral tanker had been stopped earlier by U-38 by a shot across her bow 253 miles west of Ushant (Ouessant) (48°17N/11°16W) but was allowed to continue after an examination.

About Owners

Andrew Weir & Co., Bank Line, Inver Transport & Trading, Inver Tankers, British-Mexican Petroleum,Compagnie Venture, Lago Shipping, Glasgow & London

Andrew Weir entered the ship owning business in 1885 in Glasgow when he purchased the barque SV Willowbank and eventually controlled one of the largest fleets of sailing ships under the British flag. In 1896 the company purchased their first steamship, but it was 1912 before the last sailing ship was sold. In 1905 the company was registered as Bank Line and the head office was moved to London, although the ships continued to be registered in Glasgow.
