  History

Lettens Jan09/12/2010SS Hirano Maru, built by Mitsubishi Dockyard, Nagasaki in 1908 and owned at the time of her loss by Nippon Yusen K. K., Tokyo, was an ocean liner of 7936 tons.

On October 4th, 1918, Hirano Maru, on a voyage from Liverpool to Yokohama with 340 passengers and general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine UB-91 (Wolf-Hans Hertwig), 200 miles South of Ireland (S.W. from Pembrokeshire, UK). 292 persons were lost.
Lettens Jan09/12/2010Hirano Maru was a Japanese Liner that was torpedoed by UB-91 in a strong gale in the Irish Sea, S.W. Pembrokeshire and sunk, on 4th October, 1918. She was carrying 320 persons, including 200 passengers, and was attacked at 5.30 a.m. Only 28 persons were saved.

From a Newspaper:

"Nothing was known about the eight whose bodies were washed ashore between 4th and 29th November 1918 and recorded in the Burial Register of Dale Parish Church. Because of the uncertainty of their identity, the War Graves Commission was unable to maintain the grave. The Memorial Cross was erected by the people of Dale."
