Allen Tony24/02/2009Rio Parana SS was a 4,015grt, British Merchantship built in 1902 by Irvine, Harbour Dock, England as the PESRIANA SS for the British Maritime Trust Ltd. (Furness Withy), West Hartlepool. In 1914 she was renamed RIO PARANA SS when acquired by Petersen & Co. On the 24th February 1915 when 4 miles SE from Beachy Head she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by German submarine U-8.

Aquaholic03/02/2008Neil Maw - WW1 Channel Wrecks reports: At 3.15 in the afternoon, Rio Parana was heading down the Channel and passing Beachy Head. The Master had left the bridge for a while to answer the call of nature. He had just arrived at the heads when an enormous explosion rocked his ship. Back on deck he could see that the steamer had been hit on the starboard side in number two hold either by a mine or a torpedo and, worse still, she was starting to list heavily.

Most of the doors on the starboard side had been ripped open and the saloon was wrecked and full of water. The boats were lowered within minutes and by the time they were ready for launching the water was level with the main deck. As the boats pulled clear the steamer sunk. Fortunately all the crew were accounted for. Within half an hour they were safely aboard a torpedo boat and taken to Newhaven. The master could not be sure at the time if his ship had been struck by a mine or a torpedo. However, the Admiralty made the point that several vessels had been sunk in the area at the same time and the crews had seen a submarine. Consequently the Rio Parana is listed as having been torpedoed. U-8 claimed to have torpedoed her.

Aquaholic03/02/2008NYT 24 Feb 1915 reports: No Warning to Rio Parana. Rescued Crew not sure whether mine or torpedo hit ship. Newhaven, Feb 24th (Dispatch to The London Daily Telegraph) A torpedo boat arrived at Newhaven harbour this afternoon, having on board thirty-one men, the officers and crew of the steamship Rio Parana of London, bound from Dunston-on-Tyne to Porto Firrajo, Elba with a cargo of coal. This vessel hit a mine or was hit by a torpedo about eight miles east south-east of Beachy Head and listed heavily to port. The crew state that they saw nothing and had no warning whatsoever.

The torpedo boat effected their rescue. [Note: the wreck is located in Mid Channel, nowhere near the reported location of the initial hit]
