  History

Lettens Jan17/04/2011On November 5th, 1973, Golar Patricia was traveling in ballast from Coryton, River Thames to Bahrain, when it broke in two and sank after three powerful explosions and subsequent fire on board, approx. 130 miles from the Canary Islands.

One of the 43 aboard died, while the rest of the crew, Captain Harold Stormo, two female passengers and a one year old girl were saved by the Spanish passenger ship Cabo San Vicente and brought to Tenerife.

The first explosion occurred when one of the empty tanks was being cleaned. Golar Patricia, was insured for $ 24 million and was the largest ship ever lost, until the 227,556 tons (DWT) Berge Istra sank.
