B. EXPLANATION OF WRECK FIELDS

Latitude & Longitude
at top of record:
Latitude and Longitude stated for largest scale chart, followed by horizontal datum to which positionis referred, see abbreviations document for explanation.
Square Number:For ease of use in UKHO the world is divided into a series of numbered blocks.
Wreck Number:Each record has a unique identity number.
Classification:Either unclassified or commercial in confidence. Data suppliers can request that information given toUKHO be classified as commercial in confidence for 5 years. Their data will be edited from wreck recordssupplied.
Symbol:relates to how wreck is show on British Admiralty charts. See abbreviations document for explanationof various symbols.
Largest Scale Chart:number of largest scale British Admiralty chart on which wreck plots.
Charting Comments:Various comments are used such as scale too small to show, too deep to chart etc, any legend which ischarted alongside a wreck is also given here.
Old Number:Prior to 15.12.1998 when a new database format was introduced the individual wreck. numbers were relatedto wreck squares. This field will be empty for wrecks recorded after 15.12.1998.
Category:relates to type of wreck eg stranded, dangerous, non-dangerous if known.
WGS84 Position:Latitude and Longitude related to World Geodetic System 1984.
WGS84 Origin:Defines whether WGS’84 position was supplied, or whether it was calculated from information given, eitherby the block shift stated on the British Admiralty chart, or in Home Waters by a more accurate 3D CartesianShift which converts Ordnance Survey of Great Britain 1936 to WGS’84.
Horizontal Datum:The datum to which the position at the top of the record is referred.
Position Method:Method used to obtain position of wreck. See abbreviations document for explanation.
Position Quality:gives an indication of whether wreck position has been surveyed, is considered to be precisely known, considered to be approximate, unreliable etc.
Position Accuracy:numerical value given in metres if position fixing method known.
Area at Largest Scale:gives indication if the record is charted as an area symbol. Eg. foul area or dangerous wreck shownas dotted outline. Limits or area covered will be stated in the surveying details.
Depth:least depth in metres over wreck or obstruction, related to vertical datum of chart.
Drying Height:drying height of stranded wreck or obstruction given in metres, related to vertical datum of chart, usually Lowest Astronomical Tide in Home Waters .
Height:Wreck or obstruction is always showing. Height is given in metres related to Mean High Water Springs.
General Depth:seabed depth in metres.
Vertical Datum:datum to which depths are related eg. Lowest Atronomical Tide in Home Waters, Mean Sea Level in Baltic.
Depth Method:how least depth over wreck was obtained.
Depth Quality:gives an indication of reliability of depth over wreck, eg whether least depth is known, unknown ora safe clearance.
Depth Accuracy:value in metres, this field is not used.
Conspic Visual:states whether a stranded wreck is visually conspicuous.
Conspic Radar:states whether a stranded wreck is radar conspicuous.
Historic:states whether a wreck is of historic importance. Those in British Waters covered by Statuary Instrumentare listed in Annual Notice to Mariner 16.
Existence Doubtful:states whether a wreck or obstruction’s existence is considered doubtful. Item would be charted withlegend ED on the chart.
Non Sub Contact:if Yes, this is a record which has not been identified but is known not to be a submarine.
Last Amended:gives date on which data was added that affected how a record was charted.
Position Last Amended:gives date on which the position of a wreck was changed.
Position Last:states the previous position that recorded at the top of the wreck record.
Name:registered name of vessel at time of sinking
Type:type of vesel eg submarine, steamship etc. See abbreviations document for explanation.
Flag:country in which vessel was registered at time of sinking.
Dimensions:length, beam and draught given in metres.
Tonnage:value usually given as gross for vessels, except warships and submarines which is given as displacement.
Cargo:brief details of cargo given if known.
Date Sunk:date of vessel’s sinking, stranding etc.
Sonar Dimensions:if a wreck has been surveyed its length, width and height as determined by side scan sonar are shownin metres.
Orientation:bearing on degrees that wreck lies on seabed.
Magnetic Anomaly:gives an indication of whether a reading obtained by magnetometer was slight, moderate or strong.
Debris Field:gives an indication of extent of debris scattered on seabed around wreck or obstruction.
Scour:depth in metres from seabed to bottom of scour, also length and orienation if known.
Markers:details of any buoyage or beacons marking wreck or obstruction.
General Comments:short description of condition of wreck eg. well broken, listing to port, capsized.
Circumstances of Loss:if known details given of why vessel sank or stranded, year built and builders, passage details, ownersat time of loss, lives lost, previous registered names.
Surveying Details:all details known about vessel or obstruction since first notification to UKHO. File reference for anypapers relating to record given (usually beginning H or HH), date when entry was made on record, detailsof information given in file, authority for information will be given either in curved brackets or asa foreign government chart number or survey, action taken to correct British Admiralty chart eg NM ????/03,New Edition, etc. See abbreviations document for explanation.
